Phillip Gibson

Phillip Gibson is a former senior New Zealand diplomat and the country’s first Ambassador to ASEAN. He also served as Ambassador to Japan, Indonesia, and Thailand (accredited to several Southeast Asian nations). He has held senior roles including CEO of the Asia New Zealand Foundation and Special Envoy for Disaster Risk Management. He led New Zealand’s participation in World Expos and contributed to regional security dialogues. An Otago honours graduate and Rhodes Scholar nominee, Phillip received Japan’s Order of the Rising Sun in 2017. He is currently an Adjunct Senior Fellow at the University of Canterbury.
